The Narrative of Modi’s New India: “Hindus are in Danger!”

‘’Hindu Khatre Mei Hain’’ (Hindus are in Danger) That is the drum beat the Government of India has been playing in the country for quite some time now.

 

In a country where 70% of the population comprises of Hindus, propagating such an ideology among the masses is nothing short of amusing.

The Hindu society has been quite progressive in the past century, having gotten rid of ridiculous, lingering practices like Sati, which is an obsolete funeral where a widow was bound to immolate herself on her husband’s pyre or commit suicide, shortly after her husband’s death. And even the historical caste system, which called for the people belonging to the lower castes to not sit or mingle among people of the higher castes, has been actively fought against and controlled to a major extent by the community…But Hindus are in danger?

Hindus have had their lands ruled, by Mughals first and then Christians, for centuries together, but they still grew and prospered. But now even with a Hindu Nationalist at the helm of affairs, suddenly, Hindu Khatre Mein Hain?

Hindus have lived by the principle of ‘Sarva Dharma Samabhav’ which is the Indian concept of embodying the equality of all religions, and ‘Live and Let Live’ and yet today…Hindu Khatre Mein Hain?

Unlike other religions, no Hindu has ever got attacked or killed only because he was a Hindu in the saner parts of the world… and still Hindu Khatre Mein Hain?

Hindus are respected all over the world. We have people from foreign lands coming to study our culture, but despite that…..Hindu Khatre Mein Hain??

To answer this lingering question: Yes, Hindus are Definitely in Danger!

Hindus, the forebearers of Khajuraho Temple (famous for their nagara-style architectural symbolism and their erotic sculptures), are being told that they have no business of wearing jeans or going out of the house without a male family member for company … So yes, Hindu Khatre Mein Hain.

Hindu Women, who were the first ones in India who fought for the right to get educated, are being told that their place is in the kitchen tending to their ‘Pati Parmeshwar’ (Supreme Godly Husband)….. So YES, Hindu Khatre Mein Hain.

Hindus have fought a long and hard battle against the caste system and tried for ages to eradicate it, but today a certain section of people are busy inflaming the same castes to murder and lynch people…So yes, Hindu Khatre Mein Hain.

Hindus who had the biggest amount of rationalists who brought about radical changes in the society, who fought against superstitions right from the time of Karve and Phule (rationalists from India’s freedom fighting era), are now being shot to death because they dare to be progressive …. So bearing that in mind, Hindu Khatre Mein Hain.

Hindus, who excelled in science, mathematics, languages, who wrote books on management in the foregone era, are being told to stick their heads in mythologies and believe in magic and hocus pocus thus killing their innovative minds. So yes, Hindu Khatre Mein Hain.

Hindu women who defended their nation by fighting against enemy invasions, are now told to pick up swords and rifles to kill their own countrymen…. Hindu Khatre Mein Hain.

Hindu children who used to go to Gurukul (a type of residential schooling system in ancient India where the students lived near or with the guru, in the same house, and were taught lessons from the sacred books of knowledge), are now taught how their next door neighbor is their enemy because of what he eats and what his name is…So YES!, Hindu Khatre Mein Hain.

Never has there been a time, in the history of Hinduism that Hindus had to feel apologetic about their religion.

Never had they been required to pick up banners and scream: “Not in My Name”.

Never had Hindus gone about lynching and killing people or imposing their own beliefs on others.

There was a time when I used to feel a sense of security when I saw the Saffron/Bhagwa Flag flying high on some mast. Now I get a feeling of apprehension, a feeling of fear.

So yes, Hindus are indeed in danger. But it’s not a danger from any outside forces. Hindus are in danger from their own divisive forces, whose vested interests are trying to radicalize what has always been an all-encompassing religion. A religion which has taken the good from everything around them and tried to get rid of the bad, thus evolving with time.

So, if you are a Hindu and you are suddenly feeling that “Hindu Khatre Mein Hain” , and you want to “Save The Hindus” or “Save Hinduism” then get rid of these radicals. These small bunch of hatemongers do not represent you as a community.

Throw Them Out!!! And then you will really be saving “Hinduism” And unless and until you do that…Hindu Khatre Mein Hain.

The greatness of any community is defined by the greatness of its people. By you, by me and by us. So, how we shape the future of the society is completely in our hands, or else Hindus will definitely be in danger and so will India.
